Fors Marsh Group Survey Measures Growth of Manufacturing in the United States

To help small and mid-sized manufacturers become globally competitive, Fors Marsh Group (FMG) partnered with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to measure the impact of manufacturing growth on regional economies in the United States.

FMG designed a comprehensive research program that included developing an impact survey to measure the growth of manufacturing companies in NIST’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Program. The results of the survey conducted by FMG helped determine six specific ways MEP Centers can improve the services they offer regional manufacturers to be more competitive in the global marketplace.

According to the Client Impact Survey, in 2018, the MEP National Network interacted with 27,707 U.S. manufacturers to create or retain more than 122,000 jobs, to produce nearly $16 billion in new and retained sales, to realize $4 billion in new client investments, and to achieve $1.7 billion in cost savings. FMG surveyed MEP Center customers between six months and one year after receiving services to analyze what impact the Center’s assistance had on their manufacturing firm. The MEP National Network will use the data from the survey to evaluate the performance of individual centers and to understand the program’s success at the national level.

“Evaluating how MEP Centers are contributing to manufacturing growth in the United States is critical to finding new ways to improve the Centers’ services and offerings and to increase future manufacturing growth,” said John Low, Vice President at FMG. “Using the data from the Client Impact Survey, the MEP National Network can better support an increasing number of manufacturing organizations, enable these organizations to stay globally competitive, and accelerate manufacturing growth in the United States.”
